Page 14 composed for Psalm 102 and At a Medical Deposition --
162nd day of summer, high just below 90 at 89... to the Sierra yet again, but now with Harriet and to South Lake Tahoe, via 80 and 50,
up the foothill slopes
(with weird occasional precip both directions)
of El Dorado,
coffee stop in
Placerville,
up towards Fresh Pond, catching Johannes Brahms's Variations on a Theme of Haydn (or so he thought, but definitely Op. 9) on the radio, to where the way narrows into two lanes,
winding along the
Upper South Fork of the
American River near
Kyburz,
approaching the
granitic
heights
of
Strawberry,
Lover's Leap,
winding up the
Bowl
to
Echo Summit (7382, at this telling),
then down down by the
Cliffs
into the
Basin to visit
Megan.
She is doing well,
housesitting for an MS-stricken hospital-ridden friend, whose big
dog has a big sense of smell,
in both the give-
and
take- fashion.
Out
to
dinner at
Hunan
Garden,
with more visiting,
then
back
on
89
for
back-deck lingering, with hilarious attempts to update Harriet's voicemail message,
beyond
which
a
heartfelt farewell as we reverse course, the music of Schoenberg, Hindemith, et. al of Op. 9, blaring out all the way to peaceful sleep.
